SUMMARY:Mustering Memory: 160 Years of Saluting the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center | April 14 through April 2023 \nIf anything is certain\, it is that for 160 years\, the United States has been uncertain with how best to remember the Civil War. Each generation has handled the war’s legacy in its own way\, often reflecting its own values and experiences in doing so. While the debate will continue on how this difficult subject should be remembered\, “Mustering Memory: 160 Years of Saluting the Civil War” provides the often-overlooked history of how people have chosen and still choose to remember the Civil War. From the aged veterans who walked on the fields of Gettysburg for its 50th anniversary to modern enthusiasts who use their vacation time reliving famous battles or scouring Civil War antique shows\, this exhibit offers context on where Civil War memory has been and insights for those interested in engaging with it today. \nThe exhibit will be open during regular museum hours\, which are available at rbhayes.org. Members are admitted for free. For non-members\, access to the exhibit is included with regular admission.

SUMMARY:State of The Art: Revealing Works From The Conservation Vault
DESCRIPTION:  \nToledo Museum of Art | September 24-February 5 \nState of The Art: Revealing Works From The Conservation Vault\nBeginning September 24 | Canaday Gallery \nThis exhibition opens the “conservation vault” to give visitors a glimpse of works of art that largely have been out of sight in storage for\, in some cases\, decades. The works include paintings\, sculpture\, metalwork\, textiles\, and paper and range in date from the 1500s to the 1990s. All of them are in need of conservation—specialized treatment that will allow them to return to view in the galleries in improved condition. \nA work of art—like a person—changes as it ages. Varnishes and adhesives can become yellow and brittle\, cracks may appear\, surfaces may fade or tarnish\, and materials can begin to fall apart. Conservators work to identify any problems and perform treatments to improve the condition of the art. Treatment needed for works in this exhibition includes examination and research\, analytical testing\, cleaning\, repair\, and preventive or maintenance care. Some of these treatments may result in dramatic changes in appearance; others may be more subtle. All will extend the longevity of the art for the enjoyment of museumgoers far into the future. \nLearn about some of the inherent condition problems that works of art face and the crucial role that art conservators play in keeping the Museum’s collection safe and looking its best. \nState of the Art: Revealing Works from the Conservation Vault is organized by the Toledo Museum of Art and curated by Andrea Gardner\, senior director of collections and curatorial affairs. This exhibition is sponsored locally by season sponsor ProMedica and presenting sponsors Susan and Tom Palmer\, with additional support from Taylor Automotive and Bill and Cathy Carroll; the show is also made possible in part by the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC).

SUMMARY:Matt Wedel: Phenomenal Debris
DESCRIPTION:Toledo Museum of Art | November 5-April 2 \nMatt Wedel: Phenomenal Debris\nLevis Gallery and Gallery 29A \nMonumental\, colorful\, and expressive\, Matt Wedel’s ceramics are a full celebration of what’s possible with clay. Matt Wedel: Phenomenal Debris brings together a large selection of the artist’s ceramics and drawings spanning over a decade of his career. Wedel is renowned in his field for pushing the boundaries of ceramics\, resulting in objects that recall familiar forms while also springing from his own imagination. The exhibition marks the first large-scale solo show for the artist in a major art museum. \nWedel’s practice is grounded in the exploration of human psychology. With experimentation playing a pivotal role\, he challenges himself to embrace chance\, possibility\, and failure. The resulting works are a story of creation and destruction. In Wedel’s own words\, his work is the phenomenal debris that is shed from being human. \nMatt Wedel: Phenomenal Debris is organized by the Toledo Museum of Art and curated by Diane Wright\, senior curator of glass and contemporary craft. This exhibition is sponsored locally by season sponsor ProMedica and presenting sponsors Susan and Tom Palmer\, with additional support from the TMA Ambassadors and the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC).

SUMMARY:Seeing Stars\, Divining Futures
DESCRIPTION:Toledo Museum of Art | February 3-June 18 \nGallery 1 \nSince the Stone Age\, people around the world have looked to the night sky to make sense of the universe and ourselves. The cosmos—the sun\, moon\, orbiting planets\, and twinkling stars—have inspired stargazing astronomers and artists alike\, while practitioners of astrology use the position of celestial bodies to gain insight into our characters and predict our futures. Notably\, in both Western and Eastern astrological traditions\, zodiac signs are often visualized in animal forms\, each zodiac representing certain characteristics in people’s personalities. \nSeeing Stars\, Divining Futures highlights the long history of human interest in the cosmos and its impact on earthly affairs. The exhibition showcases works from the Toledo Museum of Art’s collection that demonstrate the integration of art and divinatory practices across eras and cultures. From representations of the zodiac to tarot cards and images of fortune tellers\, we invite you to explore how artists communicate our desire to know the unknowable and foresee the future.

SUMMARY:Toledo Symphony: Ravel's Bolero
DESCRIPTION:Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle Theater | 8 p.m. \nProMedica Masterworks: Ravel’s Bolero \nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nMélisande McNabney\, harpsichord \nPaul Dukas: Fanfare from La Peri\nFrancis Poulenc: Harpsichord concerto\nMaurice Ravel: Bolero\nMaurice Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé\, Suite No. 2 \nThis all-French program features works originally composed for ballet in the first half of the 20th century and are now largely performed as concert pieces. Poulenc’s surprisingly large orchestration of his Harpsichord Concerto hints at the instruments baroque origins while influencing the neoclassical works that succeed it.
