SUMMARY:Put-in-Bay Road Races
DESCRIPTION:Put-in-Bay Airport | September 20-23 \nVintage MGs\, Porsches\, Triumphs\, and other rare sports cars return to the Put-in-Bay Road Races Reunion. PIBRRR welcomes owners/drivers of vintage sports cars to come and participate in events and activities. Join us\, race viewing is FREE! \nThe tiny island town of Put-in-Bay hosted sports car races that were conducted by the Cleveland Sport Car Club and the Northeast Ohio Region of the Sports Car Club of America one weekend each year from 1952 to 1959.  There was one additional race in 1963 coordinated by the Detroit Region of SCCA / Waterford Hills Road Racing Club\, but that race was abruptly halted when a competing Elva sports racer went off course (to avoid a dog\, the driver claimed) and crashed heavily\, fortunately without injury to driver or spectators and ending road racing on the island “forever.” \nThe cars that competed in those races were small sports cars with under 2\,000cc of displacement and sports racers (purpose-built closed-wheel racing cars) under 1\,500ccs.  Marques included production cars from makers such as MG\, Triumph\, Porsche\, Alfa Romeo\, Lotus and many others and race-bred cars such as Elva and Cooper as well as a host of home-bred varieties.  The drivers were strictly amateurs\, racing for the fun of it\, but many went on to make significant names for themselves in racing.  These include Carl Haas\, Chuck and Susie Dietrich\, Chuck Stoddard\, Tom Payne\, Ralph Durbin and a long list of others.  Despite the challenging roads and difficult spectator control\, there is no record of any major injuries that resulted from conducting these races. \nMore information about the PIBRRR can be found here.

SUMMARY:State of The Art: Revealing Works From The Conservation Vault
DESCRIPTION:  \nToledo Museum of Art | September 24-February 5 \nState of The Art: Revealing Works From The Conservation Vault\nBeginning September 24 | Canaday Gallery \nThis exhibition opens the “conservation vault” to give visitors a glimpse of works of art that largely have been out of sight in storage for\, in some cases\, decades. The works include paintings\, sculpture\, metalwork\, textiles\, and paper and range in date from the 1500s to the 1990s. All of them are in need of conservation—specialized treatment that will allow them to return to view in the galleries in improved condition. \nA work of art—like a person—changes as it ages. Varnishes and adhesives can become yellow and brittle\, cracks may appear\, surfaces may fade or tarnish\, and materials can begin to fall apart. Conservators work to identify any problems and perform treatments to improve the condition of the art. Treatment needed for works in this exhibition includes examination and research\, analytical testing\, cleaning\, repair\, and preventive or maintenance care. Some of these treatments may result in dramatic changes in appearance; others may be more subtle. All will extend the longevity of the art for the enjoyment of museumgoers far into the future. \nLearn about some of the inherent condition problems that works of art face and the crucial role that art conservators play in keeping the Museum’s collection safe and looking its best. \nState of the Art: Revealing Works from the Conservation Vault is organized by the Toledo Museum of Art and curated by Andrea Gardner\, senior director of collections and curatorial affairs. This exhibition is sponsored locally by season sponsor ProMedica and presenting sponsors Susan and Tom Palmer\, with additional support from Taylor Automotive and Bill and Cathy Carroll; the show is also made possible in part by the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC).
