SUMMARY:Metroparks Toledo Folk Series
DESCRIPTION:Various Locations | June 28\, August 18\, September 23 \nMetroparks Toledo Music Festival Folk Series \nSunny War\nGlass City Metroparks\n1001 Front Street\nOpen-air outdoor concert\nWednesday\, June 28\, 7:30 p.m.\nReservations Required\, Tickets are FREE or Pay What You Want\nWe kick off our 2023 Folk Music Series with the Punk Folk Rock of Sunny War at Glass City Metropark on Wednesday\, June 28. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso has been described as one of the best new voices in Roots music. Sunny has crafted a set of songs that draw on a range of ideas and styles\, as though she’s marshaling all her forces to get her ideas across: ecstatic gospel\, dusty country blues\, thoughtful folk\, rip-roaring rock and roll\, even avant-garde studio experiments. She melds them together into a powerful statement of survival\, revealing a probing songwriter who indulges no comforting platitudes and a highly innovative guitarist who deploys spidery riffs throughout every song. \nParking: Parking can be found at Waite High School with shuttle\, and two lots on 815 Front Street\, all free. Glass City Pavilion parking lot is for handicap-accessible parking only. \nSteve Madewell with special guest John Barile\nBrookwood Area\n5604 Swan Creek Drive\nIntimate listening experience\nFriday\, August 18\, 7 p.m.\nReservations Required\, Tickets are FREE or Pay What You Want\nWhile enjoying a remarkable career in the conservation field\, Steve maintained an active musical performance schedule. He started performing when he was 13 and he has never stopped. He has released three solo projects\, Rivers and Trails\, Arrow Creek\, and most recently\, Hometown Blues. This project hit 15 on the FAI folk charts for April 2022. \nHis songs have been described as subtle musical “arrangements with words that carry substantial weight.” Many of his tunes incorporate bits of Ohio history giving his musical stories a tie to place and an organic validity. In addition to performing as a solo artist\, Steve has many side projects with other musicians and musical ensembles. John Barile will be joining Steve for the evening. John is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and he is constantly performing across Ohio. This duo was a standout at the 2022 Lake Erie Folk Festival! \n*Brookwood Area is an intimate listening room experience. Advanced reservations are required. All tickets are complimentary. \nThe Antivillians\nToledo Botanical Garden\n5403 Elmer Drive\nReservations Required\, Tickets are FREE or Pay What You Want\nSaturday\, September 23\, 7 p.m.\nThe Antivillains is the work of songwriter Sarah Cohen. Born in the Rust-Belt city of Toledo Ohio\, her songs are populated by quiet dramas that have come and gone and pictures of messy lives somewhere in the middle. \nThe music can be cloudy and dreamy\, drawing comparisons to the music of Yo La Tengo or Cat Power with glimmers of the honest and tragic storytelling of Townes Van Zandt or Gillian Welch. As a band\, they have performed alongside such groups as Lucius\, Allison Russell\, Birds of Chicago\, The Go Rounds\, Chris Bathgate\, Breathe Owl Breathe and countless others throughout the United States. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Hamler Community Park\, Hamler\, Ohio | July 28-30 \nThe 55th annual Hamler Summerfest – “The Granddaddy Of Them All!” \nAdmission Prices\nFriday $7 / Saturday $7 / Sunday $5\n3-Day Pass $15\nUnder age 16 admitted free with parent. \nGates open approximately 1 hour before music starts.\nFriday\, July 28 – Gates open at 4:30 p.m. (Food line at 5)\nSaturday\, July 29 – Gates open at 2 p.m. (Food line at 3)\nSunday\, July 30 – Gates open at 10 a.m. (Food line at 11:30) \nGerman Food: Bar-B-Que Chicken / Bratwurst / Hot Beef / Hot Dogs / Beef & Noodles / Baked Beans / German Potato Salad / Sauerkraut / Ice Cream \nThe idea for the first Hamler Summer Fest in Henry County came when a few couples in 1968 visited the Frankenmuth festival in Michigan and enjoyed its gemurtlekeit (sociability). Both communities are of largely German descent. The first festival began on a Sunday afternoon in a tent behind the American Legion Hall\, with two polka bands and a makeshift dance floor. The response was overwhelming with 900 people attending\, many until after midnight. The next festival in 1970 was held over two days\, attracting 2\,000 people. The festival continued to grow in popularity\, overflowing the streets and tents. In 1973\, festival organizers decided to purchase 13 acres that could be used as a park and festival grounds. In 1975\, the Hamler Summerfest honored Hamler’s 100th anniversary with a parade with 80 units\, a baking contest\, a beard and mustache contest\, a dress and bonnet contest\, and lots of German-style food-bratwurst\, German potato salad\, hot dogs and sauerkraut\, lots of beer\, and several polka bands. In July 2000\, the festival attracted 20\,000 visitors from across the country. \nComplete schedule:\nwww.hamlersf.com.
