This biennial\, transatlantic team match-play competition features the 12 best European players from the Ladies European Tour (LET) and the 12 best U.S. players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour. \nHeld every two years\, the event has grown into the most highly coveted trophy in women’s professional golf team competition; some of the most memorable moments in the sport have happened during past Solheim Cups and berths on the European and U.S. teams are highly sought-after by players from both organizations. The Solheim Cup is named in honor of Karsten and Louise Solheim\, the founders of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation\, which makes PING golf equipment. \nThe first Solheim Cup was staged in 1990\, with the latest 2019 Solheim Cup having taken place on September 13-15\, at Gleneagles\, Scotland. The European Team won back the coveted Waterford Crystal trophy by 14½ to 13½ points. Team USA currently holds a 10-6 lead in the all-time series. \nABOUT THE SOLHEIM CUP\nHOW IT WORKS\n\nTeams are made up of 12 players\, a captain and three assistant captains.\nThe event has three days of competition.\nDays one and two comprise of a morning session of foursome matches and an afternoon session of four-ball matches.\nThe final day is made up of singles matches\n\nABOUT MATCH PLAY FORMATS\nFoursome Match\n“Foursome” play is a match where two golfers from the same team are paired up to compete against two golfers from the other team. Each team plays one ball and the golfers play alternate shots until the hole is played out. \nFour-ball Match\n“Four-Ball” play is a match where each member of the two-player team plays her own ball. Four balls are in play on each hole. The lowest score from each team will be the score for that team. \nSingles Match\n“Single” is a match where one player from Team USA competes against one player from Team Europe. Each will play her own ball. On the final day\, all twelve members from Team USA will compete against the twelve members from Team Europe in singles matches.
