SUMMARY:Toledo Symphony: The Planets
DESCRIPTION:Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle | March 22-23 \n8 p.m. \nRita Barbour Kern Masterworks \nIn the spring of 2024\, Toledo will be in the direct viewing path of a total solar eclipse. To celebrate this phenomenon\, the Toledo Symphony has commissioned ADJ*ective New Music – a composers’ collective with ties to Toledo – to compose a suite of new planets. Paired with Gustav Holts’ Planets with stunning visuals from KV 265\, this program explores both the scientific mysteries of space and our planets and the human imagination of what lies beyond our world.

SUMMARY:Toledo Symphony: Rite of Spring
DESCRIPTION:Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle | 8 p.m. \nRita Barbour Kern Masterworks \nOne hundred seventy-six years before the scandalous premiere of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring\, composer Jean-Féry Rebel was indeed rebelling against the baroque style with his cacophony of dense chords that turned chaos into the creation of the world around us. John Tavener’s Eternity’s Sunrise provides a moment of calm before Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.

SUMMARY:Toledo Opera: Romeo & Juliet
DESCRIPTION:Valentine Theatre | February 16 & 18 \nRomeo & Juliet \nThe world’s most celebrated love story finds a new dimension in Charles Gounod’s classic retelling of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.  Set in 15th century Verona\, the deep and rapturous love between Romeo and Juliet rivals the longstanding feud between their families – the Montagues and the Capulets. Will these star-crossed lovers be able to endure their feuding kin or succumb to tragedy? From tender intimacy to ecstatic grandeur\, Gounod’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s eternal drama comes to life in a cinematic-inspired production. Gounod’s lush\, romantic opera will explore the fragility of innocence and youth in the face of political turmoil. Real life couple – and Toledo Opera audience favorites – Zach Borichevsky and Kathryn Lewek star as Romeo and Juliet. Maestro Adam Turner returns to Toledo to conduct as director James Mitchell brings this timeless tragedy to life. \nStarring Metropolitan Opera soprano Kathryn Lewek as Juliet and Metropolitan Opera tenor Zach Borichevsky as Romeo. \nSung in French with English Supertitles

SUMMARY:Dwight Yoakam
DESCRIPTION:Stranahan Theater | 8 p.m. \nDoors: 7 p.m.\nTickets: $49 to $254 at etix.com or Stranahan Theater box office. \nRaised on the Bakersfield honky tonk of Buck Owens and traditional country like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams\, Dwight Yoakam has created more than a dozen studio albums of his self-described hillbilly music over nearly four decades. On his 2012 collection\, “3 Pears\,” the Kentucky-born performer reached out to Kid Rock and Ashley Monroe of Pistol Annies for co-writing help on a couple songs\, while Beck co-produced the successful set. \nTicket buyers know a slew of Yoakam singles when they head to his concerts — from the chart-topping “Guitars Cadillacs” from the similarly-titled 1986 debut and “I Sang Dixie” off of 1988’s “Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room” to 1993’s “A Thousand Miles from Nowhere.” And when he’s not on the tour bus canvassing the nation\, the singer/songwriter may be on a movie set. His acting credits include critically acclaimed roles as an abusive boyfriend in “Sling Blade” and a psychopath killer in “Panic Room.”

DESCRIPTION:Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle | January 19-20 \n8 p.m.\nRita Barbour Kern Masterworks\nOlga Kern Plays Rachmaninoff \nToledo loves Rachmaninoff … and Olga Kern! Born into a musical family Olga Kern embodies the spirit of Rachmaninoff with her incredible musicality. She was the First Prize winner of the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition at age 17. She was the first woman to win the Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in more than 30 years. Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is full of poetry\, beauty\, warmth\, and rich orchestrations. Witold Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra contains stylized Polish folklore in melodic themes where the composer creates new harmonies with added atonal counterpoints.
