Dance Theatre of Harlem
Valentine Theatre | 8 p.m.
Back By Popular Demand! • National Tour! Dance Theatre of Harlem will be dancing their new ballet Passage, commissioned by the Virginia Arts Festival in partnership with American Evolution for the 50th Anniversary of Dance Theatre of Harlem and the 2019 Commemoration, recognizing the 400th anniversary of a series of pivotal events in America’s history that continue to define the nation’s path.
Among these events are the arrival of enslaved Africans, the recruitment of women in large numbers, and the first democratic assembly. Drawing upon underlying themes of struggle and aspiration, the ballet reflects, in abstract, the fortitude of the human spirit and an enduring will to prevail. The presentation of Passage by Dance Theatre of Harlem is made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
