Art Tatum Celebration Jazz Concert

The University of Toledo Department of Music welcomes jazz pianist, Matthew Fries as the guest artist for the 2024 Art Tatum Celebration Jazz Concert. Fries is a celebrated composer, band leader and educator. He has shared the stage with a long list of jazz performers that includes Curtis Stigers, Stacey Kent, Ann Hampton Callaway, DeeDee Bridgewater, Vincent Herring, Steve Wilson, Joel Frahm, Steve LaSpina, Dave Samuels, Claudio Roditi, Terell Stafford and many others.
He has recorded five albums and toured internationally with his collaborative, original music trio TRI-FI – a group that has received rave reviews from Jazz Review and Downbeat Magazine, among others.
Fries is a past winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition and a finalist in the American Pianists Association Jazz Piano Competition. He is a dedicated educator who continues to teach lessons, masterclasses, and clinics throughout the U.S. and abroad.
